What is a "Charter" School?

Hoosier Academies is designated as a charter school. According to the Indiana Department of Education, "A charter school is a public school that is nonsectarian and nonreligious and operates under a contract or charter. Under Indiana Code, charter schools are established to serve the different learning styles and needs of public school students, to offer public school students appropriate and innovative choices, to afford varied opportunities for professional educators, to allow freedom and flexibility in exchange for exceptional levels of accountability, and to provide parents, students, community members, and local entities with an expanded opportunity for involvement in the public school system."

What is a "Blended Learning" School?

A blended learning school offers students both traditional, face-to-face instruction with a state-certified teacher for part of the school week, and off-site learning (including online) for the remainder of the week, facilitated by a Learning Coach. This unique blend of traditional brick-and-mortar schooling with a robust, online experience gives students a learning opportunity that exceeds the limitations of either model.

What is a "Virtual" School?

Virtual schools, simply put, happen online - but include extensive teacher support. Unlike traditional schools in which classes take place in a physical building, virtual schools take place anywhere there is an Internet connection. That can be at home, on the road, or wherever the connection can be made. Students take courses online with support from their teacher via phone, online Web meetings, and some face-to-face interaction. In addition, students are provided with all the textbooks, manipulatives, and supplies necessary to complete their schoolwork.

A parent or other responsible adult, in the role of Learning Coach, keeps the student on track with lesson plans provided by Hoosier Academies. While courses are delivered online, there are plenty of opportunities to connect both online and offline with a vibrant school community.
