What grades are offered by Hoosier Academy at Indianapolis (Hoosier)?
Hoosier serves Indiana students in grades K–8.
What subjects will my child study?
Language arts, math, science, history, music, and art are the core courses. There will also be other courses in the appropriate grade levels, such as physical education. Kindergarten students take language arts (including phonics), math, history, and social studies. Visit our elementary and middle school curriculum pages for more details.
Does the program provide textbooks and other instructional materials?
Yes. We provide the textbooks and instructional materials needed to complete the program. The amount and type of materials varies by grade and course. Books and materials are available at the Learning Center and are sent to students directly for the subjects they will study in their at-home portion of instruction. Common household items and office supplies like printer ink and paper are not provided.
Can my child work at their own pace?
The pace of the elementary and middle school programs is shared between the teacher at the Learning Center and the student's Learning Coach. Whether at the Learning Center or working with a Learning Coach, students will have the opportunity to explore concepts in depth and spend more time on concepts that might be challenging. The middle school program does not offer the same level of flexibility as the elementary program because middle schoolers are required to complete quizzes, tests, and other assignments in a timely manner.
What happens if my student completes a course mid-year?
Hoosier will send a student who completes a course mid-year to the next level until January 26. After that date, courses cannot be ordered again until the next fall. Teachers work closely with students and Learning Coaches to help pace the curriculum to meet the student's goals for advancement.
How much time do students spend on the computer?
In the younger grades, many of the online lessons include offline work. Students in grades K–2 spend about 30–40 percent of their time on the computer, while students in grades 3–5 spend about 50–60 percent of their time online. Screen time increases in middle school. In the Learning Center, the computer is primarily a tool for the teacher to facilitate lessons with the whole class or small groups.
Do you provide curriculum for children with special needs?
Yes, through our Child Find campaign. Depending on a child's IEP, we should be able to tailor our curriculum to meet your child's needs. To discuss this with us, please contact our office and we will put you in touch with our special education team.
Hoosier strives to identify, locate, and evaluate all enrolled children who may have disabilities. Disability, as stated in Article 7, includes such conditions as hearing, visual, speech, or language impairment, specific learning disability, emotional disturbance, cognitive disability, other health or physical impairment, autism, and traumatic brain injury.
As a public school, we will respond vigorously to federal and state mandates requiring the provision of a free appropriate public education regardless of a child's disability or the severity of the disability. Parent permission and involvement is a vital piece in the process. Once a child has been identified as having a suspected disability or identified as having a disability, Hoosier will ask for information about the child, such as:
- How has the suspected disability or identified disability hindered the student's learning?
- What has been done educationally to address the student's learning needs?
- What educational or medical information relative to the suspected disability or identified disability is available to be shared with the school?
This information may be obtained from the student, his or her parents, present or former teachers, therapists, doctors, or from other agencies that have information about the student.
All information collected will be held in strict confidence and released to others only with parental permission or as allowed by law. In keeping with this confidence, Hoosier will keep a record of all persons who review confidential information with the exception of authorized school employees or other educational agency personnel. Parents have the right to review their child's records at any time.

Can you accommodate the accelerated learning needs of my advanced learner?
The beauty of our program is that it is flexible enough to meet children where they are in any given subject and take them where they want to go. Grade placement assessments, completed as part of the enrollment process, allow us to place your student in the appropriate level of curriculum. So, for example, if your fourth grader is doing math on a sixth-grade level and reading on a fourth-grade level, we can tailor lesson plans to meet your student's abilities.
How do students interact socially?
Because Hoosier students are with peers regularly in the Learning Center, they have opportunities to engage in many collaborative activities, including science experiments, literature discussions, and providing feedback on a peer's written work. Throughout the year, students will be invited to participate in school outings, field trips (e.g., to historical sites, museums, zoos), picnics, and other social events. In addition, local groups of students and parents can get together on their own. The family directory provides a way for families to network with other families in their region of the state.
Will this program intrude into my home?
There are no home visits as part of the program, and there are no other intrusions into your home.
Can students do extracurricular activities in their resident district?
This decision is made on a district-by-district basis. Hoosier staff are proactive in identifying extracurricular activities for students.
